"Dead Island: No Retreat" Live Action Short Analysis
This zombie action contains many convections and cliches of the genres. The short shows a small group of survivors (a very common staple of zombie media) trying to survive the zombie apocalypse, In the short they have to deal with zombies and a band of psycho survivors. The short is set in a cabin in the middle of the woods this setting is common in the zombie horror genre like in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead Series(1980s). Having a band of psychopaths coming after our heroes is also a common part of post apocalyptic Zombie media such as The Walking Dead(2010-present). The short also features common use of slow motion which is another convention of zombie media such as Zombieland (2009). The zombies in this short are very fast and rabid these types are more common in movies such as 28 days later (2002) and World War Z (2013). This Zombie type works better for these more action oriented zombie films versus the slower ones which are more built for a traditional tense horror character driven zombie flicks. The film ends on a cliffhanger of whenever the main characters die or survive, even though it is more implied that they die, This ending is done as a quick and easy narrative end, but it is also done to give the audiences something to discuss and interpret.
